Let's Make a Change!
We are collaborating with schools across Martin County to sponsor clean water wells for villages in South Sudan as we partner with Water for South Sudan and Students4H2O.
Some facts to share with students:
- 663 million people on our planet lack access to safe, clean drinking water
- The task of collecting water tends to fall on women and children between the ages of eight and 13. As a result, women are often unable to get jobs or contribute financially to their households. Children are often unable to go to school or get an education due to the thousands of hours they have to spend annually just hauling water.
- They fill a jerry can with water. These 5 gallon containers weigh 44 pounds. Women and children are walking many hours carrying these and the worst thing is that the water they bring home for their family is often contaminated and makes children and their families sick.
- Together, WE can make a difference! Imagine how having a well with access to clean drinking water could change an entire village and affect lives. This would be a GREAT thing to talk about with your students---can they think of what might change?
We are also starting something we are calling #waterwednesdays
Wednesday, your class can meet fundraising goals and get rewards to celebrate. The first one is coming up next week---If your whole class collectively donates at least $10, the class can have 5 minutes of extra recess! That’s a win for students, a win for teachers, and a win for our efforts to build a well!!
