BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
Stuart Middle School became a PBIS school in August, 2008. Part of PBIS is a token economy that rewards students who follow the school-wide expectations of being Respectful, On task, Appropriately dressed, and Responsible. Students who are awarded ROAR cards may redeem them during the year for a variety of goods and services within the school and community.
Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) gives people a new way to think about behavior. PBIS is based on understanding why problem behaviors occur – the behavior’s function. This approach to behavior can occur on a school-wide level, in a specific setting, classroom, or with an individual student. PBIS is the application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools to increase academic performance, increase safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish positive school cultures.
The PBIS process is a team-based approach that relies on a strong collaboration between families and school staff from a variety of disciplines regardless of the level implemented.
